Ferrite Magnets |
| |
| Ferrite magnets, also known as ceramic magnets, are the most popular magnets available today. Composed of barium or |
|
strontium ferrite, these materials exhibit good resistance to |
demagnetization and corrosion. Energy product ranges from 1MGOe to about 4.5MGOe. As ferrite magnets are the lowest cost magnetic materials available today, they are widely used in consumer goods. Ferrite magnets are non-conductors, which is a benefit in many applications too.
Magnetic Property:
Typical Magnetic Properties of Ferrite Magnets
Characteristics:
·Low cost, widely used in many different applications.
·Fairly good magnetic properties.
·Stable magnetic property with strong demagnetization

resistance capability.
·Good corrosion resistance capability, no coating needed for surface protection.
·Hard and brittle mechanical properties, cannot withstand impact or flexing, can be cut by diamond tools.
|
Machining and Tolerances:
|
Ferrite magnets are very hard and brittle, consequently machining must be done with a diamond wheel in an unmagnetized state. Standard tolerances for ferrite magnet dimensions are +/-.005" for ground dimensions and +/- 2% of feature size for as sintered dimensions. Close tolerances are also available by abrasive grinding and cutting. |
Temperature Effects:
|
Up to about 450°C, changes in magnetization are largely reversible. And the degradation of magnetic properties is essentially linear with temperature. Maximum operating temperature for ferrite magnets is 250°C.
|
| |
Surface Treatments: |
The corrosion resistance of ferrite is excellent, and no surface treatments are required. |
Magnetization:
|
| Anisotropic grades are oriented in the manufacturing direction, and must be magnetized in the direction of orientation. Isotropic grades are not oriented and can be magnetized in any direction. Both isotropic and anisotropic magnets can be magnetized with multiple poles on one or both pole surfaces. Ferrite magnets require magnetizing fields of about 10kOe. |
Applications:
|
Widely used in motors, loudspeakers, microwave devices, electronics, machines, instruments, meters, home appliances, stationery, toys, crafts, etc. |
