SmCo Magnets

As NdFeB magnets, Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnets also belong to rare earth magnets, which are the most advanced commercial permanent magnets today. SmCo magnets have high magnetic property and low temperature coefficient.

Energy product ranges from 14 MGOe to 32 MGOe. SmCo magnets are manufactured in two compositions: Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17 - often referred to as the SmCo 1:5 or SmCo 2:17 types. 2:17 types, with higher Hci values, offer greater inherent stability than the 1:5 types.
Unlike NdFeB magnets, SmCo magnets are suitable for working temperatures higher than 350°C. SmCo materials are less subject to corrosion and usually do not require coating or plating. SmCo magnets may be the most effective answer to difficult magnetic design problems. SmCo magnets are available in both sintered and bonded forms.

Magnetic Property:
Typical Magnetic Properties of Sintered and Bonded SmCo Magnets

Characteristics:

·Very high magnetic properties with good stability.
·Superior resistance to high temperature, working temperature can be as high as 350°C
·Excellent corrosion resistance capability, no coating is needed.

Machining and Tolerances:

SmCo materials are extremely brittle and machining operations should be carefully performed before magnetization, using diamond tools. Standard tolerances for SmCo magnets are +/-.005" for ground dimensions. Close tolerances are also available by abrasive grinding and cutting.

Temperature Effects:

SmCo magnets can operate at temperatures up to 350°C, depending upon the grade and permeance coefficient. Sm2Co17 materials exhibit superior temperature characteristics as compared to the Sm1Co5 types.

Surface Treatments:

The corrosion resistance of SmCo magnets is excellent. Coatings are not required for SmCo magnets.

Magnetization:

SmCo magnets are anisotropic can only be magnetized in the direction of orientation. In general, magnetizing fields of approximately 30 to 45KOe are required to saturate Samarium Cobalt magnets. Special consideration must be given to this when designing complex assemblies. Rare earth magnets are mechanically weak, and magnetically very strong. They must therefore be handled very carefully to avoid damage and injury to personnel handling the magnets.

Applications:

Widely used in motors, watch, transducers, instruments, meters, positional detector, particle accelerators, generators, electronics, aviation, radar, etc.

Shapes and Sizes Available:

Various shapes and sizes are available. Non-standard shapes and sizes also can be made according to blueprint specifications. Please contact us for your needs.
